What Is the Difference Between AEO and SEO?
The difference is the destination. SEO is about earning a position in a list of links. AEO is about being part of the answer that an AI system writes. With SEO, success looks like a ranking and a visit. With AEO, success looks like a mention, a citation, or a recommendation, sometimes without any visit at all.
The methods differ less than the names suggest. Both depend on a website that search engines can crawl, content that answers real questions, and a business that other sources confirm is real and credible. If you are new to the term, start with what AEO is and what it stands for.
How Do AEO and SEO Compare Side by Side?
This table summarizes the practical differences. The GEO column is included because the term comes up in the same conversations.
| Factor | SEO | AEO | GEO |
|---|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank pages and earn clicks | Be the source of a direct answer | Be mentioned or cited in AI-written responses |
| Where results appear | Organic results, map listings, image and video results | AI Overviews, featured snippets, voice answers, AI assistants | ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot, Claude |
| Signals that matter | Relevance to the query, technical health, links, page experience, local signals | Everything in SEO, plus direct answers, clear structure, accurate structured data | Everything in AEO, plus consistent entity information and third-party mentions |
| Content format | Pages built around a topic and its keywords | Question headings with a short answer first, then detail; lists and tables | Self-contained passages with specific facts that still make sense when quoted alone |
| Measurement | Mature: rankings, impressions, clicks, conversions | Partial: snippet and AI feature visibility, sampled manually or with tools | Limited: sampled prompts, referral visits from AI tools, indirect signs |
| Timeline | Typically 3 to 6 months for meaningful movement | Similar; changes tied to search retrieval can appear sooner | Similar for retrieval; changes to what a model learned in training are slower and outside your control |
Two points in the table deserve emphasis. First, the signals stack: AEO does not swap SEO signals for new ones, it adds to them. Second, measurement gets weaker as you move from left to right. That is a limitation of the tools available today, not a sign that the work has no effect.
What Is the Difference Between AEO and GEO?
AEO and GEO describe nearly the same work. AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) is the older term. It grew out of featured snippets and voice assistants, where a search engine lifts one short answer from one page. GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the newer term. It describes AI systems that read several sources and write an original response.
The emphasis differs slightly. AEO pays the most attention to the format of the answer on your own page. GEO pays more attention to how your business is described across the web, because a generated response can draw on many sources at once. In practice a sound plan covers both, and many agencies, including ours, use the two terms interchangeably.
How Does GEO Compare with SEO?
GEO compared with SEO is the same comparison as above with one addition: a larger share of the result depends on things that are not on your website. A generative system may describe your business using a directory listing, a review site, a news article, or a forum thread. SEO has always valued what others say about you, mainly through links. GEO extends that to plain mentions and descriptions, even without a link.
That makes consistency more important. If your business name, services, and location are described differently in different places, a system that combines sources has a harder time producing a confident and accurate statement about you.
Where Do AEO and SEO Overlap?
Most of the work is shared. Doing any of the following improves your position for both:
- Crawlability and indexing. Answer engines that search the web rely on search indexes. A page that is not indexed cannot be retrieved.
- Speed and clean HTML. Content that is present in the page source, loads quickly, and does not depend on heavy scripts is easier for every kind of crawler to read.
- Content that answers real questions. Pages written around what customers ask perform well in search and give answer engines something to quote.
- Structured data. Organization, LocalBusiness, Service, Article, and FAQ markup helps search engines understand a page. How much language models use it directly is not documented, but it supports the search systems they depend on.
- Credibility. Named authors, real contact details, reviews, and references from reputable sites.
- Local presence. A complete Google Business Profile and consistent listings help with map results and with questions like "who does this near me."
- Internal linking. Related pages that link to each other make it clear what your site covers in depth.
Where Do AEO and SEO Differ in Practice?
The differences are mostly a matter of emphasis:
- Passage over page. SEO tends to evaluate a page as a whole. An answer engine often uses one passage. Each important section should make sense when read alone.
- Answer position. In AEO the answer comes first, directly under the heading. A long lead-in works against you.
- Specifics over keywords. Named services, ranges, steps, and conditions are more useful to an answer engine than repeated phrases.
- Mentions as well as links. For generative systems, being described accurately on other sites matters even when no link is attached.
- Crawler policy. AI providers run their own crawlers. Your robots.txt and firewall settings decide whether they can read your site.
- Reporting. SEO reporting is built on clicks. AEO reporting has to accept that visibility may not produce a click, and that it can only be sampled.

Should You Invest in SEO or AEO First on a Limited Budget?
Start with the SEO foundation, then add the AEO layer to your most important pages. Splitting a small budget evenly across both from day one usually means neither gets done properly. This is the order we recommend:
- Fix technical problems. Indexing errors, slow pages, broken links, missing titles, and anything that blocks crawlers, including AI crawlers you want to allow.
- Complete your Google Business Profile and core listings. For a local business this is often the highest-return step, and it feeds both search and AI answers.
- Rewrite your top pages answer-first. Take the five to ten pages that matter most, usually services and location pages, and restructure them around customer questions with direct answers.
- Add accurate structured data. Organization or LocalBusiness on the site, Service on service pages, FAQPage where questions are visible.
- Publish a small set of useful guides. A few pages that answer the cost, timeline, and comparison questions in your field are worth more than dozens of thin posts.
- Build mentions steadily. Ask for reviews, join relevant directories and local organizations, and pursue coverage where you have something real to say.
- Start a simple monitoring routine. A fixed list of questions, checked monthly in the main AI tools, next to your regular search reporting.
Steps one through four are SEO and AEO at the same time. That overlap is the main reason a limited budget goes further than people expect.
When Does AEO Deserve More Attention?
AEO deserves a larger share of the effort in a few situations:
- Your customers research before they buy, comparing providers, prices, or approaches over days or weeks.
- Your service needs explanation, so people ask "what is," "how does," and "is it worth it" questions.
- You already rank reasonably well and want to protect that visibility as more answers appear above the results.
- AI tools currently describe your business incorrectly, or name competitors and leave you out.
If your site has basic technical problems or almost no search visibility, fix that first. AEO work on a site that cannot be crawled or indexed has little to build on.
Will AEO Replace SEO?
There is no sound basis for predicting that, and we would be cautious of anyone who claims certainty in either direction. What can be said is that the main AI answer systems that cite sources depend on web search to find them. As long as that is true, the work that makes a site rank is also the work that makes it retrievable for an AI answer.
A more useful way to plan is to stop treating them as separate projects. One site, one set of content, one set of business facts, optimized for people first and readable by both kinds of systems.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the main difference between AEO and SEO?
SEO aims to rank your pages in search results so people click through to your website. AEO aims to have your business cited or named inside an AI-generated answer. AEO builds on SEO, and most of the work overlaps.
Is AEO replacing SEO?
No. AI answer systems that cite sources rely on web search to find them, so a site still needs to be crawlable, indexed, and relevant. AEO is an added layer on top of SEO, not a substitute for it.
What is the difference between AEO and GEO?
AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) focuses on being the source of a direct answer. GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) focuses on being mentioned in responses that an AI writes from several sources. The work is nearly identical, and the terms are often used interchangeably.
Should a small business do SEO or AEO first?
Start with the SEO foundation: technical fixes, a complete Google Business Profile, and clear service pages. Then add the AEO layer by rewriting key pages answer-first, adding accurate structured data, and building consistent mentions on other sites.
Does AEO need different content from SEO?
Mostly the same content, structured differently. AEO favors question headings with a short answer directly underneath, followed by detail, plus lists and tables for anything comparable. Each section should make sense when quoted alone.
How do you measure AEO compared with SEO?
SEO has mature reporting for rankings, impressions, and clicks. AEO measurement is partial: you can track referral visits from AI tools and sample a fixed set of questions over time, but there is no complete record of how often an AI system mentions your business.
