How to Rank in ChatGPT and AI Search

There is no ranking position in ChatGPT the way there is in Google. An AI assistant either mentions your business in its answer or it does not. To improve the odds, make sure your site is indexed by search engines and open to AI crawlers, answer customer questions directly on your pages, keep your business information consistent everywhere, and earn mentions on other reputable sites. No one can guarantee a citation.

Can You Actually Rank in ChatGPT?

Not in the sense of holding position one for a keyword. ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, and similar tools write a new answer for each question. The same question can produce different answers depending on the wording, the user, the location, and the day. "Ranking in ChatGPT" is shorthand for something more modest and more accurate: being one of the businesses or sources the answer includes.

The work that improves those odds goes by several names: ChatGPT SEO, LLM SEO, AI SEO, GEO, and AEO. They all describe the same set of practices. If the terms are new to you, our guide on what AEO is covers the definitions.

How Do ChatGPT and Other AI Assistants Find Businesses?

AI providers do not publish the full details of how their systems pick sources, and the details change. At a general level, an assistant can draw on two kinds of knowledge.

Training data

A language model is trained on a large body of text collected up to a cutoff date. Businesses and topics that were widely and consistently described in that text may be "known" to the model. You cannot submit your business to a model's training data, you cannot see what it contains, and it only changes when the provider releases a new model.

Live retrieval

For many questions, especially ones about local providers, prices, or anything recent, the assistant runs a web search, reads some of the pages it finds, and writes an answer based on them, usually with links to the sources. This is the path a business can influence, and it is why search engine visibility still matters. A page that search engines have not indexed is unlikely to be found by an assistant that relies on search.

How Do the Main AI Search Tools Differ?

The tools behave differently enough that it helps to know the basics of each. This table stays at the level that is publicly understood.

Tool Where answers come from What that means for you
ChatGPT The model's training data, plus web search for questions that need current or local information Be indexed in the major search engines, and decide whether to allow OpenAI's crawlers in robots.txt
Google AI Overviews Google's search index and its other data, such as business listings Standard Google SEO applies. Google's public guidance does not list any special markup as a requirement
Perplexity Web search on most questions, with numbered citations Clear, specific, well-sourced pages are easy to cite, and the citations make it easy to see which sources were used
Gemini, Copilot, Claude Training data, plus web search when the feature is used The same foundations apply. Copilot draws on Bing, so Bing indexing matters

What Makes an AI Assistant More Likely to Cite a Business?

These are the factors that are widely understood to help. The exact weight of each is not public, and it likely differs between tools.

Being indexed and retrievable

Your pages need to be in search indexes, including Bing and not only Google. Set up both Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools, submit your sitemap, and fix indexing errors. Make sure the main content is in the page's HTML and does not appear only after scripts run, since not every crawler executes JavaScript.

Crawl access for AI bots

AI providers operate their own crawlers and publish their names. OpenAI documents GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, and ChatGPT-User. Perplexity documents PerplexityBot, and Anthropic documents ClaudeBot. Some crawlers collect data for training and others fetch pages for search or at a user's request, and you can allow or block each one separately in robots.txt. These names can change, so check each provider's current documentation. Also check your firewall or security plugin, because some block AI bots by default.

Entity consistency

An entity is a specific, identifiable thing, such as your business. Systems that combine sources need to be confident that the business on your website, the one on Google Business Profile, and the one on a review site are the same. Use the same name, address, phone number, and description of services everywhere, and link your profiles to each other.

Third-party mentions

AI answers frequently draw on sources other than the business's own site: review platforms, directories, local news, industry publications, and community discussions. Accurate, independent descriptions of your business give an assistant corroboration. This cannot be shortcut. Paid placements and fake reviews carry real risk and tend to be low quality.

Answer-first content

Write pages that state the question in a heading and answer it in the next two or three sentences, with specifics: what you do, where, for whom, typical timelines, and how pricing works. A passage that stands on its own is easier to quote correctly.

Structured data

Schema markup such as Organization, LocalBusiness, Service, and FAQPage helps search engines interpret a page and connect it to your business. Whether language models read schema directly is not documented. It is still worth doing, because it supports the search systems that AI assistants depend on, and it must match what is visible on the page.

llms.txt

llms.txt is a proposed convention: a plain text file at the root of your site that summarizes what the site is and lists its most important pages for AI systems. It is easy to create and does no harm. It is also an emerging idea, not a standard that AI providers have committed to. There is no public confirmation that it affects whether you are cited, so treat it as a low-cost extra and not as a strategy.

What Should You Do First to Show Up in AI Answers?

In priority order, starting with the steps that remove hard blockers:

  1. Check what AI tools say now. Ask ChatGPT, Google, Perplexity, and Gemini the questions a customer would ask. Record whether you appear, what is said, and which sources are cited.
  2. Confirm indexing in Google and Bing. Fix crawl errors, submit your sitemap, and resolve anything marked as excluded that should be included.
  3. Review robots.txt and firewall rules. Decide which AI crawlers you want to allow and make sure nothing blocks them by accident.
  4. Correct your business information. Bring your website, Google Business Profile, Bing Places, and main directories into agreement.
  5. Rewrite key pages answer-first. Start with service and location pages, then add a small number of guides that answer cost, timeline, and comparison questions.
  6. Add accurate structured data. Organization or LocalBusiness, Service, BreadcrumbList, Article, and FAQPage where the content is visible.
  7. Build real mentions. Ask customers for reviews, join relevant directories and associations, and contribute to local or industry publications.
  8. Publish an llms.txt file. Optional, quick, and without a guaranteed effect.
  9. Re-test monthly. Use the same questions each time and track the trend, not single answers.

Most of this list is ordinary search engine optimization. For how the two relate and where to spend first, see AEO vs SEO.

What Is Unknown or Outside Your Control?

A realistic plan accounts for the limits. These are the main ones:

  • How sources are selected. Providers do not publish their selection logic, and it changes without notice.
  • What is in the training data. You cannot inspect it, add to it, or correct it directly.
  • When models are updated. Release schedules belong to the providers.
  • Variation between answers. Two people asking the same question can receive different answers. Personalization, location, and randomness all play a part.
  • Accuracy. An assistant can state something wrong about your business. You can improve the sources it draws on and use the provider's feedback tools, but you cannot edit the answer.
  • Query volume. There is no public data on how often people ask AI tools about a given topic.
  • Attribution. A person may hear about you from an assistant and later search your name or visit directly. That visit will not be labeled as coming from AI.

Because of these limits, be cautious with any offer that guarantees placement in ChatGPT or promises a specific number of citations. The honest version of this work improves your odds and makes your business easier to describe correctly.

How Long Does It Take to Show Up in ChatGPT?

It depends on which path the answer takes. When an assistant searches the web, a newly indexed or improved page can be picked up the next time a relevant question is asked, though nothing guarantees that it will be. Building enough consistent mentions to be named regularly takes longer. We give the same expectation we give for SEO: typically 3 to 6 months of steady work for meaningful change, and longer in competitive markets. Changes to what a model learned in training follow the provider's schedule.

How Can inSpace Agency Help?

Our AEO and GEO services start with an audit of how AI tools currently describe your business and what is blocking them, followed by technical fixes, answer-first content, structured data, entity cleanup, and monthly monitoring. The work is planned together with SEO, because the two share a foundation. For local businesses, our Austin AEO page explains the local side.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I pay to rank in ChatGPT?

You cannot buy a place in the answers through optimization work. AI providers may offer their own advertising products, which are separate from the organic answer. An agency can improve the signals that make a mention more likely, but it cannot purchase or guarantee one.

Does ChatGPT use Google or Bing to find websites?

When ChatGPT searches the web, it relies on search indexes and its own crawlers. OpenAI does not publish every detail and the sources can change, so the practical advice is to be indexed in both Google and Bing and to allow the AI crawlers you want in robots.txt.

Is ChatGPT SEO different from regular SEO?

Mostly it is the same work with different emphasis. Indexing, clear content, and credibility still come first. The additions are allowing AI crawlers, writing self-contained answers, keeping business information consistent, and earning mentions on other sites.

Do I need an llms.txt file?

It is optional. llms.txt is a proposed convention for summarizing a site for AI systems. It is quick to create and harmless, but there is no public confirmation that it changes whether you are cited.

Should I block or allow AI crawlers?

If you want AI assistants to be able to read and cite your pages, allow the crawlers they use for search. Some providers run separate crawlers for model training, which you can allow or block independently in robots.txt. It is a business decision, and the right answer for most service businesses is to allow access.

How do I know if ChatGPT is recommending my business?

Ask it the questions your customers would ask and record the answers over time, since they vary. Also check your analytics for referral visits from AI tools. There is no complete report of every mention.
